Budget Hero puts you in charge of the federal budget, letting you prove just how bad (or not) the U.S. government is handling things.
The flash-based game is produced by American Public Media, and tries to give players a better understanding of how the federal budget works and what is required to keep it running smoothly.
“[Budget Hero] lets people explore the major issues of the election by changing the federal budget to match their stands on issues and their values,” American Public Media’s Brad Robideau wrote to Boing Boing.
Just how realistic is it? According to Robideau, “American Public Media worked closely with the Congressional Budget Office, GAO and others on the data and devoted months of reporter and researcher time to creating the game.” Let the fun begin!
Maybe Nintendo could adapt it for the Nintendo DS and turn into one of its training games.

As Second Life matures, they are taking some fairly customary steps, one of which is to take a more proactive role to protect their own intellectual property. In this vein, Linden Labs has created the Second Life Brand Center, which details the proper and improper use of Linden Labs trademarks. In addition, Linden Labs has created the “inSL” mark for users to use under certain conditions to signify their presence in Second Life. The Brand Center is online here.

Our Xbox-toting brethren at 360 Fanboy recently came across a list of Xbox Live Arcade titles which may be up for expungement in Microsoft’s spring cleaning of their online store. The list (available after the break) includes all titles that fulfill the first and second criteria of Microsoft’s new standards — that is, they’ve been available for six months, and currently hold a 65 percent or lower average score on Metacritic. A steady conversion rate (the number of people who purchase the complete title after downloading the demo, a figure only Microsoft has access to) is the only thing standing between these games and a date with the delete button — so if you’ve been holding out on downloading Shrek-N-Roll, you may want to pick it up in an expedient manner.

I was just looking around in Youtube a bit earlier and I found a pretty amusing video of World of Warcraft players getting bored inside Karazhan and they start playing musical chairs in the Moroes room. This shows you what people can do when they’re bored. but shouldn’t they be raiding the place? This definitely cut into their raiding time if they were indeed supposed to be clearing the place.

The dialog may sound cheesy, but Alone in the Dark looks like it could be good enough (and given our hands-on, maybe even 3 million units good enough) to try when it releases in late June. In the video above, Atari/Infogrames Directeur Général Délégué Phil Harrison speaks to 1Up about being impressed after seeing AitD for the first time and enjoying the narrative structure of the title.
The real highlight in the video is the impressive amount of gameplay footage shown, which gives us a much better idea of what the title will actually be like. We’re not sure yet if Alone in the Dark will be “blow your mind” fantastic, but much like The Darkness last summer, it appears well suited in getting some attention from the consoles it’ll launch on during a less-than-crowded release time. Don’t fret PS3 owners, you should be way too busy with Solid Snake starting June 12 to care about little ol’ Edward Carnby.

FatSegal, it seems, went to the same games shop as I did, They stocked 4 games in there, you know, The Wild Bunch, Chuckie Egg 2, Saboteur and Wriggler. I played these 4 games to death on my Speccy and I’ve been playing the first 2 again on my (insert Java based device of choice here) since the portly one ported them and stuck ‘em on the forum.
A remake of Saboteur, however, is a massive undertaking and, the fool that he is, FS has created a thread announcing his intentions to give it a blast. Guess what, it’s getting a lot of interest too.
Details are sketchy but as FatSegal’s remakes are generally very faithful to the originals, this is one that I am waiting on with baited breath…
I’m off to don my shinobi shozoku to get me in the mood, it’s in my cosplay box somewhere……

According to Eurogamer, Metal Gear heads Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa will be in London next week to scribble signatures across their latest work, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Kojima and co. will be at the HMV Oxford Street, London store as of noon, though fans are encouraged to prepare their stampede at 9AM. With the meeting occurring on June 2nd, there won’t be any copies of the game available, though HMV will provide 300 game sleeves to those who drop five pounds on a pre-order. If you want to show Kojima how much you care, ask him to draw a little heart on your sleeve.
Not in London? Catch the man in New York on midnight, June 11th. He’ll look marvelous in your collection.

Hey all don’t forget tonight is GTA IV Community Night. You can join us in the chat room, starting around 9:00EST if you want to chat while waiting to get into a game. If you have signed up you will get an invite from the gamertag you signed up with, either www360voicecom, communitynight, or gamerdna. We will be running two simultaneous games, and we will work in new players every few games.
As a reminder, we have a diverse group of folks in our community, so we ask everyone be considerate with language and play style. I know we have such a great group of people that this won’t be an issue, but I hope at least people take it easy on me as I am kind of noobish on GTA IV still.
People playing from 360voice.com
www360voicecom: Fatty Chubs
communitynight: Squidpunch
gamerdna: QforQ
ChangeAgent wont be joining us tonight, because he’s scared he’s traveling, so the 3 of us our holding it down. For those of you who don’t know QforQ, he is new to our small family here. He is the Game Talent lead at GamerDNA. And although he is new to our site, he is no noob to gaming. QforQ, (or Sam Houston) got his start with consoles like Genesis and N64 but also computer games where he joined competitive FPS clans for Call of Duty and Call of Duty: United Offensive. He was introduced to the MMO genre with Final Fantasy XI but it wasn’t until The Matrix Online released that he had developed an interest for massive worlds. With the Matrix Online Sam began broadcasting internet radio for gamers and podcasting for internet video gamers. This hobby has taken Sam across the US to interview game developers and broadcast live from Sony Online Entertainment’s Fan Faire in Las Vegas. Lately he joins myself and ChangeAgent regularly for Rock Band, putting my skills to shame on all instruments.
Sam will be jumping between games tonight and hopes to meet a lot of you.

The guys over at Penny Arcade finally have a cinematic trailer for their game developed by Hothead Games, On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness (which, by the way, is the hardest name EVER to remember for a video game).
And it’s just in time, too. Why? Because the game is due to hit the world on the Windows, Mac, Linux and XBox 360 systems on May 21st. Which, in theory, is just days away. I won’t believe May 21st is just days away until it’s actually here. Me and days of the week - we just don’t have a good chemistry.
Check out the trailer here:

Whenever we think of training simulators for the local boys and girls in blue, one arcade classic always comes to mind — the appropriately titled Police Trainer. We had the occasional desire to protect and serve as we effortlessly moved through the games virtual ranks; it was only later we discovered that cops are rarely called upon to shoot multicolored balls from the sky, nor are they required to play simple matching games using their trusty peacemakers.
A more “realistic” (see: less fun) simulator from researchers out of Abertay University in Scotland recently received some press when the game’s creators suggested it for training purposes for Scotland’s Finest. The sim’s focus on making on-the-fly decisions on whether to shoot a dangerous suspect or hold fire would certainly come in handy for officers (and, consequently, for those not accidentally shot). The Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland have been hesitant to adopt the new simulation, however, relying solely on repeated viewings of the Guttenberg classic “Police Academy” for all training purposes.
